Sigh.
I wasn’t really going to talk about the Wonder Woman Playboy thing, mainly because I’m not that upset about it. I rolled my eyes at it and that’s about it. It’s Playboy, for god’s sake!
I’m still not worked up about it but one thing is dancing around in the back of my mind. This photo spread takes WW’s strength, intelligence, courage, and power and boils it all down to just her sexuality. That becomes ALL that she is. Feminism isn’t about getting rid of the sexy. It’s about viewing women as more than their sexiness. These photos—like so many comics—don’t view women in comics as three dimensional characters. They’re pretty much there as T&A.
Again, I’m not really that upset about it. But I do think it takes the way women are treated in comics and just brings it into our reality. Naked woman. Boobies. Ass. Mouth shut. Legs spread. That’s the way we like our women in comics.
Not really surprised by it.
ETA: Now I’m reading some of the excuses for this kind of thing and I’m falling out of the Meh category and into the That’s your excuse? You have to be kidding me!
