Beating Our Heads Against A Brick Wall

I’m not religious. I also don’t care if anyone else is religious. Good for them—in fact, I wish I could be religious. I wish I could have that comfort.

But I don’t. But I’ll tell you something that gets my rage up—evolution vs. creationism. I can’t read anything about this debate without feeling my blood pressure go through the roof.

Here’s an essay on why evolution is wrong. Not great—I really just stumbled upon it. But I believe it’s indicative of the thought processes that go into creationism.

The first argument for creationism is always “Evolution can’t be proven.” Am I the only person who remembers learning about the scientific method in third grade? Am I the only one who remembers that theories exist to be proven or disproven? That a theory usually exists as the best explanation of something?

Evolution is a theory. A theory is not a bad thing. It explains the evidence up to this point. If scientists find evidence that changes the theory, then the theory will change. And no, there’s no conspiracy between the scientists. I can assure you that if one of them found evidence of something worthy of a change in the evolutionary theory, he’d move like the Flash to make it public. Not only would his name be known in the scientific community but he’d probably get a great book deal too.

Also—I’m not attacking, I’m just pointing out something—you can’t mock a theory for its evidence when your theory rests on a book and what you believe. Honestly, why is it so much harder to wrap your head around the Big Bang theory than it is to accept an omnipotent being creating the world in seven days? Also not a good idea to laugh and mock evolution while you’ve got the whole big-guy-with-a-white-beard-in-the-clouds thing going on.

And that brings me to the whole Intellectual Design idea. Just stop. Please. It’s your faith. Be proud of your faith. Carry the badge proudly. You don’t need it proven to yourself through sloppy science. Be happy you have that comfort. If you feel the need to have everything in your world—your music, TV shows, movies, and your science—prove and/or reinforce your faith, maybe that faith isn’t very strong to begin with.
